Why board games and not, say, bowling or bars?

Because a noisy bar rewards the loudest person in your team, and bowling rewards the one who bowls. A game table is the rare activity where the rules are new to everyone, the turns come around evenly, and everyone leaves having had a great time, even the quietest person.

Also board gaming is very social. It improves communication, trust and creative problem-solving, and your team members leave with new in-jokes and camaraderie.

  1. Everyone takes a turn, by design

No one gets left behind because of over-enthusiastic teammates.

  2. Low stakes, real decisions

People negotiate, bluff and back down over something that doesn't go into a performance review.

  3. It ends on time

A finite game has an ending. Drinks don't. People with kids and trains can plan around it.

Four ways to run it

Actually, two choices really: do you want us in the room, and do you want us to run the session? Most teams start with a hosted night and self-host from there.

What kind of games? Monopoly?

No, not Monopoly. Never Monopoly. Fast rules, short games, high engagement — tailored to your group size, with a spread of styles so every personality in the room gets a moment.

  • Social deduction

Someone at the table is lying. Finding out who teaches you more about your colleagues than a year of stand-ups.

    • Deception: Murder in Hong Kong
    • Quest
    • Hollywood 1947
  • Drawing games

No artistic skill required — the terrible drawings are the point. The reveal at the end is the event.

    • Telestrations
    • Pictomania
    • Scrawl
  • Co-operative

The whole table wins or loses as one. Watch who steps up, who listens, and who quietly saves the day.

    • Just One
    • The Crew
    • Hanabi
  • Auction & bluffing

Push your luck, read the room, overcommit spectacularly. Poker nerves, no poker rules.

    • High Society
    • Skull
    • No Thanks!
  • Dexterity

Stacking, flicking, balancing, collapsing. The loudest thirty seconds of any session, guaranteed.

    • Klask
    • Junk Art
    • Rhino Hero
A stack of board game boxes modelled in plasticine: Skull, Just One, Codenames, Telestrations, Wits & Wagers and High Society.

Hosts you can put in front of your team without a second thought

Office Rules was built by people with careers spent in the corporate world and two decades in board gaming. The first part matters more than you'd think. It means hosts who know how offices actually work — how to read a room with a director in it, how to get the graduate and the GM at the same table, and when a game should end before the energy does.

Every box your people-and-culture team needs ticked is already ticked, for every facilitator we send.

  • National Police Check

Current for every facilitator, available to sight on request.

  • Working with Children Check

Held and current, for family days and events where under-18s are present.

  • Public liability insurance

$20m cover. Certificate of currency available for your venue or procurement team.

  • Privacy by default

No attendee data collected or kept. No sign-up sheets, no mailing lists, no photos without your express permission. Your enquiry email is used to reply to you, and that's the end of it.

  • Discretion as standard

What happens in your boardroom stays there. No client names or session stories in our marketing without written permission.

Infrequently asked questions

What's the ideal group size?

Between ten and thirty. Under ten still works and often plays better, it just costs more a head against the minimum. Over forty we split the room into tables running in parallel, which is a different night — good, but louder.

How far ahead do we need to book?

Two to three weeks is comfortable. November and December are the exception: there are seven bookable Friday evenings before Christmas and one of me. When they're gone, an online session runs any evening and a drop-off runs whenever suits you.

What if we need to reschedule?

Move it once, free, up to seven days out. Inside seven days we'll still try — it depends what else is in the calendar that week. Nobody gets charged for a flu that went through the floor.

Can we mix in-person and online?

Yes, and for a hybrid team it's usually the right call. The room plays at tables, the remote people play in a browser, and the scores land in the same place. Tell us the split when you enquire and we'll pick games that work both ways.

Do you cater for accessibility needs?

Tell us what you need and we'll bring games that fit. Colour-blind-safe components, large-print teach-cards, seated-only formats and no-timer variants are all normal requests, not special ones.

Do you do drinks and food?

Event Night comes with a catering partner if you want one. For the shorter formats most teams do their own thing — games and grazing food get along fine. We'll ask you to keep red wine one table away from the cards.

Do we need a big room?

Less than you'd think. A boardroom with two tables pushed together handles twenty people. For forty or more we'll want a second space or an open area — but we've run good nights in worse.

What do you actually bring?

The games, the teach-cards, scoring kit, and the host. You supply tables, chairs and power. That's the whole list.

How long do you need for set-up and pack-down?

Thirty minutes either side. We arrive before your team does, and the room is back the way we found it within half an hour of the last game.

Can you run it at a venue instead of our office?

Yes. Function rooms and private bars work well, provided there's light to read a card by and the music can come down. We'll say so if a venue won't work.

Do you travel outside Melbourne metro?

Inside the metro, travel is in the price. Beyond it we'll quote travel separately rather than bury it in the per-head rate.

Does it work with Teams or Zoom?

Yes. You run the call on whatever your company already uses — Teams, Zoom, Meet, it genuinely doesn't matter. We provide the game layer in a browser alongside it.

What does everyone need to install?

Nothing. Your team gets a code by email and opens a browser tab. No accounts, no passwords, no app store, no "please create a profile".

What happens to our staff's data?

It's purged after every event. Names exist for the length of the session and are deleted when it ends. Nothing retained, nothing sold, no marketing to your team afterwards.

How many people can join one call?

Eight to forty. Past forty the call itself becomes the problem, not the game, so we split it into two sessions on the same evening.

Can people play on a phone?

They can, and some games play better that way — phone in hand, laptop for faces. Nothing needs a second screen.

Check a date.

Date, headcount, and whether you want us in the room or on the call. You'll get availability and a price back the same day, or the next morning at the outside.
